PROCEDURE METHOD FOR PORTRAITURE

Speaking to a client in person to get acquainted, understand their tastes, style and aesthetics, helps me to create an intimate, accurate portrait. I prefer to work from photographs that I take myself, generally shooting about 100 - 200 pictures and then using a composite. People are usually most comfortable presenting themselves in their own environment. The wide choice of poses, location and scheduling with ample photographic reference yields a natural, individually tailored portrait.

Years of painting exclusively from life has given me the background to transpose my skills into attaining equally effective results using photographs. I'm able to work with more intensity and at optimal times with the flexibility of this method. If necessary, I can finish a painting in less than two weeks. On the average, I will work from two to eight weeks on a piece depending on the specifics of the job.

In the instance of a posthumous commission, besides the photos provided, I take the opportunity to learn what I can about the person from their family and colleagues.
