ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Armed with the tenet that small, ordinary truths often illuminate larger fields, I paint with an eye towards the tension and beauty that can occur when humanity, technology and the natural world convene at random points. These images - plain, familiar, observed from common angles, are my visually transposed moments of willed isolation and affection for an inherent sense of belonging.

"When humanity, technology and the natural world convene"... Sarah Yuster's landscapes embrace the vortex. Her particular ability to convey atmosphere, air and subtle light, results in paintings that nail a moment, flash a glimpse or hint at a mystery.

Sprawling, lush and sentimental treatment is lavished on both likely and unlikely subjects, while others are spare, offhand remarks... and there's an occasional elbow jab of dry humor. A viewer will likely connect somewhere along this spectrum of compelling images.

She's been commisioned by the Wall Street Journal, The NY State Legislature, City University of New York and the NYC Department of Education among others.

Her work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian's Museum of American Art, Academy of Design, NYC galleries, and hangs in major institutions and corporate headquarters throughout the New York metropolitan area. Yuster's artwork is prominently displayed in locales beyond the US border in Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Moldova, London, Milan, Athens, Budapest, and Bangkok.

Via the NYC Council on the Arts she created The Firefighter's Commemorative, a powerful triad of paintings which includes her pre 9/11 NYC skyline piece, Yuster's now iconic view of lower Manhattan, as seen from the crest of Victory Boulevard overlooking the harbor. The World Trade Center eclipses a section of sunrise hues; the pre-dawn North Shore traffic sparse in the foreground.

In 2011, she curated an exhibit, "Artists Respond to September 11" for the National Lighthouse Museum which included these works and those of esteemed colleagues.

Her home and studio is on Staten Island, New York City's quiet borough, where she lives with her husband, musician Robert Mosci. They have a son and daughter, Ian and Nora.
