For many already overburdened with life's endless chores and responsibilities, the preparations involved, even for the most well meaning, can tax the spirit.    Despite all the tedium and cliche, there remains a core that transcends the negative. A genuine sense of warmth, good will, and generous human spirit more often than not rises above, giving important meaning to the family get togethers and celebrations.    Religious and historical elements are the foundations on which the various holidays are based. These spiritual underpinnings are still a significant component for many celebrants.    For most of us, however, the all important reason for the festivities is the children. Kids of all ages fervently anticipate this magical time of year. Parties, visits, treats, and coveted presents have them longing for the holidays months in advance. It's a timeless ritual that's fulfilled yearly, giving parents, relations and friends a chance to shower the little ones in their life with loving offerings. Pure moments of joy are often shared. Although the giving of gifts can be overdone, in the right balance it's a wonderful rite that is affectionately passed on and gratefully received through the generations.    All in all, on the grand balance sheet, the master ledger seems to point to the positive.
